Recent History An ancient coral reef first discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and claimed by the British in 1632, Jumby Bay Island takes its name from "jumbie," Antiguan colloquial for "playful spirit." Originally a sugar mill, the island has been held by a series of owners including a family of sugar planters. It was developed as an ultra-luxe resort and vacation community in the 1980s. Now owned by passionately committed homeowners, the resort is a reflection of their casual elegant island lifestyle.
Beaches The island features two excellent white-sand sunbathing beaches, Jumby Bay Beach and Pasture Bay Beach.

There are beautiful Colonial-style four-poster beds carved with pineapples and banana leaf details and covered with Italian linens. Almost all rooms/suites have new outdoor garden bathrooms, arranged for privacy within four-walled courtyards and featuring deep, pedestal-footed soaking tubs or blissful rain shower.

Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and named for a cathedral in Seville, Spain, Antigua is rife with destinations not to be missed including Nelson's Dockyards on the edge of English Harbor at the southern end of the island. The only existing Georgian naval dockyard in the world and home to Horatio Nelson and Royal Navy during the 18th and 19th centuries, the dockyard's restored buildings house picturesque restaurants, museums and shops featuring locally produced goods. Overlooking the harbor visitors will spy Shirley Heights, once one of Antigua's most important defensive positions (and home to the Royal artillery Guard House), and now a spectacular lookout point. Antiguans head to this well-loved area on Sunday evenings for traditional barbeque and live music. Shoppers are drawn to Redcliffe Quay in St. John's, Antigua's historic capital, and those in search of culture should explore the 1716 Court House, the oldest building in St. John's, or the ancient tools and artifacts of the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. Groups The entire island can be bought out for small conferences during the spring, summer and fall months.
